Why Vals?

Vals is the most joyful from the three tango genres with its ¾ notation and happy feel of spinning and floating. One just cannot resist getting on the dance floor. The music simply takes you in.

The biggest difference between Vals and Tango is hidden in the interpretation of double time (1--2-|-3--1). If interpreted exactly, double time would fall somewhere between 2 and 3, closer to 2 and further from 3, but not exactly on 2 and not exactly on 3.

Prerequisites:

To benefit fully from this course, you should be familiar with:

  • Molinete and giros (left and right)
  • Comfortable direction changes in forward and back crosses (ochos)
  • Basic understanding of sacadas, barridas, boleos, ganchos, volcadas, colgadas, and alterations

If you're not yet comfortable with these, we recommend preparing for the next edition of this course.

Course Content:

Vals Vocabulary: Steps are essential yet secondary to the understanding they represent. Throughout this course, you'll accumulate a rich repertoire of steps, combinations, and sequences that will eventually become second nature, enabling you to express Vals fluently.

Vals Musicality: We will discuss, re-discuss, and discuss some more structure of Vals, affixed 1-2-3 rhythm, repetitive parts, Vals criollo versus Vals cruzado, double time emphasizing accent on TWO or THREE in patterns and timing, changes in timing based on phrases, cadencia, phrasing of Vals and more.

Transformative Learning:

This course is designed for progressive learning, with each class building on the previous ones. Even if you have taken Vals courses before, you'll discover new insights and depths in your understanding and performance.

Encouragement for Full Commitment:

While drop-ins are possible, they are not encouraged. The progressive nature of this course means each class introduces new material based on previously covered concepts. For optimal growth and transformation, we highly recommend committing to the full 16-week journey.
