Beekeeping in Alaska Class - Sunday 24 November 2024 10a-5pm over zoom. Beekeeping in Alaska Class provides participants with a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of beekeeping in our state, from the initial steps of ordering and receiving bees to managing their activities throughout the spring and summer seasons. This course is ideal for individuals who are new to beekeeping or those looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field. In this class, participants will be introduced to beekeeping best practices, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to be able to choose how to respond to their bees instead of reacting in panic mode during their initial season(s). The class covers a wide range of essential topics, including bee biology, equipment, bee hives, hive inspections, colony management, nutrition, feeding techniques, honeybee behaviors, hive dynamics, varroa mites, nosema, wax moths and how to spot and identify the viruses and diseases that plague honey bees as well as developing an integrated pest management plan. Participants will also gain an understanding of the different roles of bees within the hive and learn how to interpret the activities of the both the bees and the colonies. Additionally, participants will be guided through the process of harvesting honey, providing them with the skills necessary to collect and process honey. ***Class includes a copy of the presentation/handbook, access to the recording of the class, and more additional resources than you would probably request.
