Three-time Grammy nominee, Ruthie Foster transforms sorrow into career defining soul+blues joyful journey. From a family of gospel singers, as a teenager, Foster began fronting blues bands in the bars of Waco, Texas. Hoping for a wider view of the world she served our nation in the US Navy and was cherry-picked to sing with the naval band, PRIDE. Following her tour of duty, Foster headed to NYC and readily scored a record deal with Atlantic. The label had the intention of cultivating her as a budding pop star, but she preferred, instead, to explore the various strains of American roots music that informed her childhood. When her mother fell ill in 1993, Ruther suddenly returned to Texas to care for her.

Her list of honors is extensive. She is a native of Austin, Texas but travels extensively all over the world. Her concert at Bartlett Arboretum is made possible in part by a grant from the KCAIC in support of new and expanded works via our popular Tree House Concert series.
