Help CGSI Publish Denní Hlasatel on the Internet

Denní Hlasatel, a Chicago Czech-language newspaper, was founded in 1891, with over a 115-year run. In addition to thousands of obituaries, its pages contain advertisements for commercial establishments and professional services, want ads, marriage announcements, reports on judicial proceedings and coroners’ inquests, and letters to the editor from subscribers around the country. CGSI will be the ONLY internet source for the full run of the paper.

Look at the breadth of information! On Sept. 2, 1917, Josef Fuka asked for help finding his missing son Vaclav. A May 1, 1916, ad announced, “For sale, cheap, well running grocery, due to illness in the family, 6450 S May St.” In the June 8, 1914, “From Our Friends’ Letters” column, Václav Pučelík, from Fairfield, Washington, described his travels in California and the Pacific Northwest; John Brohlec, from Metamora, Ohio, chronicled the weather’s effects on the local beet crop; and Frank Pospíšil wrote from Beardsley, Kansas, that he won’t participate in the debate about prohibition, lest his wife reprimand him, “but I have to point out that there is a lot of drinking here in our Kansas.”

CGSI now has the digitization and publication rights to the over 39,000 issues of the newspaper, most of which have been microfilmed onto 551 reels, each containing over 600 images. The costs to purchase and digitize the reels, collate the digital images into a usable, OCR-readable format, and host the final product online will be more than $50,000.
