Pelvic Floor Function/Dysfunction 4.5CE

Attendees will learn the function of the pelvic floor muscles, the reasons for dysfunction, and how to assess whether a client has high or low tone. Learners will be able to participate in many experiential exercises and learn advanced massage techniques for ancillary muscle and fascia of the pelvic floor to treat stability, low back pain, hip pain, and much more.

Video recordings segments are included for both experiential exercises and demonstrations of massage therapy techniques in this home study course that the instructor would normally be showing in a live class. 

Directions: Students are encouraged to watch the entire course video which includes both lecture and demonstrations first, then review any recommended readings, videos, or articles second. Third students should read through the test questions once, and then go to the Power Point presentation, reading both the slides and the instructor notes under the slides before attempting the test questions.

Students should return the test answers and evaluation form via email to receive their certificate of completion.

Objectives:

 1. Describe the role of the pelvic floor muscles in supporting lumbopelvic, urinary, reproductive, and gastrointestinal health.

 2. List the signs and symptoms of a hypotonic or hypertonic pelvic floor, and when to refer to a specialist who can do an internal examination for further diagnosis.

 3. Identify visual and palpable indications of a correct pelvic floor contraction.

 4. Integrate pelvic floor activation and relaxation into core training programs to improve outcomes for incontinence, balance and low-back, hip, and pelvic pain.

5. Perform ART and massage techniques for surrounding muscles including obturator internus, piriformis, psoas, gluteus medius, and TFL, and more.
