Book Review

Leamington Tennis club celebrated its 150th anniversary at the weekend. Coincidently, a book about the Spa town’s association with the game of tennis was launched at the event, attended by some 400 people from all over the county. The author is local solicitor, Susan Hopcraft, and the book β€œLeamington’s Game” runs to some 300 pages.

The book is outstanding. I can recommend it whole heartedly. It will be of interest to anyone interested in sport. Susan is a lover of tennis, an historian, and a good writer. β€œLeamington’s Game” is her first book. It has authority, solid information, and much human interest. Not only does the work record the first game of tennis played by four gentlemen at the Manor Hotel around 1874, and the town’s connection with the early history of the sport but also has a good deal of information on local tennis clubs and personalities since 1960.
