Celebrating 20 years of the Jambalaya Soul Slam!
February 11, 2025
Doors 7pm
Show 7:30pm
In honor of the Jambalaya Soul Slamβs 20th Anniversary, the Hayti Heritage Center presents a special Spoken Word event featuring Rudy Francisco. Spoken Word poetry can be emotional, inspirational, educational, and as creative and expressive as the imagination. Rudyβs work is an example of that truth. As an artist, Rudy Francisco is an amalgamation of social critique, introspection, honesty and humor. He uses personal narratives to discuss the politics of race, class, gender and religion while simultaneously pinpointing and reinforcing the interconnected nature of human existence. His poetry collections Helium, Iβll Fly Away, and Excuse Me As I Kiss The Sky have been critically acclaimed. Rudy was the first spoken word poet to perform on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and was most recently seen on ABCβs The Bachelorette as the contestantβs poetry coach. He is a captivating storyteller and this is one performance you do not want to miss!
This special event will also feature performances by members of the Bull City Slam Team (BCST), Durhamβs own nationally and regionally competing poetry slam group. The group has produced multiple regional and national poetry slam champions in its 20 year history.
This will be an amazing evening of dynamic spoken word poetry. Stories will be told. Truths will be shared. Life will be explored. Fun will be had.
